One of the hottest artists in the world is undeniably the God of tropical house – Kygo.
Rising out of relative obscurity with several instantly iconic remixes to major hits, Kygo has become one of the most in demand DJs across the globe. Having headlined festivals like Lollapalooza, TomorrowWorld, and Ultra Music Festival, Kygo has cemented himself as one of the greats of this generation.
So how did he manage to capture the attention of the entire world?
With Kygo’s upcoming performance at Exodus Las Vegas, we thought we’d shine the spotlight on this Norwegian legend and fill you in on everything you need to know before you cut some shapes on the dancefloor to his tunes. Enjoy!
Ever since he was a child, Kygo was destined for greatness.
Kyrre Gørvell-Dahll was born on 11 September 1991 as a non-native foreign in Singapore. His mother is a dentist and his father was working as an overseas worker in the maritime industry at the time. Along with his four other siblings, he spent his childhood travelling the world to places like Brazil, Japan, Kenya and Egypt.
By age six, Kyrre was taking piano lessons regularly and showed a passion for all things musical. By his teenage years, he had stopped taking traditional piano lessons and instead focused his attention on electronic music, preferring Logic Studio and a MIDI Keyboard over tickling the ivories. Kyrre actually came up with his stage name based on an automatically assigned username he received for his highschool learning portal – a portmanteau of Ky(rre) and Gø(rvell) to create Kygo.
When he was halfway through a Business & Finance degree, he decided to pursue music as a full time career.
Kygo began to achieve his dreams in 2014, when multiple different major breakthroughs came his way.
Kygo’s rise to fame is mainly attributed to a viral remix her created of Ed Sheeran’s “I See Fire”. The title track to The Hobbit blockbuster trilogy, Kygo added his signature tropical vibes to the already spine tingling track and it became an instant viral sensation. With over 68 million listens on SoundCloud, it was clear this was an up and coming talent to be taken seriously.
In the same year, Kygo released his hit single “Firestone”, which pretty much everyone will remember as one of the hits of the summer. After reaching 80 million views on SoundCloud and YouTube, Kygo’s idol Avicci and Chris Martin from Coldplay reached out to him to request a remix of their song “Midnight”. He then went on to perform alongside Avicci at Findings Festival, and was eventually announced as Avicci’s replacement at TomorrowWorld following his idol’s health concerns.
By the end of the year, Kygo signed a huge record deal with Sony International and Ultra Music, guaranteeing his shot into stardom.
While 2014 was the year Kygo broke onto the scene, 2015 was the year he became a legend.
Over the course of the year, Kygo released five singles that tore up the charts and garnered hundreds of millions of views across multiple streaming platforms. By December 2015, he had become the fastest artist to reach 1 billion streams on Spotify – no mean feat when competing with acts like Justin Beiber, Calvin Harris, and Nicki Minaj.
The following year would bring the drop of Kygo’s debut album, with collaborations with huge names like Angus & Julia Stone and John Legend. Kygo then broke another record by becoming the first house music producer to ever perform at an Olympic ceremony, closing out the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics at their closing ceremony.
