Diplo

Thomas Wesley Pentz. That’s right, I bet you didn’t know that the professional DJ, songwriter and record producer’s real name is Thomas Wesley Pentz, but it is! This talented man is based in Los Angeles, California but he makes trips to our Las Vegas stages regularly — we are more than excited to host Diplo every time in Vegas.

You have probably seen this guy featured on a variety of songs since his prowess extends to many remits beyond the “normal” capabilities of your average disc jockey. He has worked with Gwen Stefani, Shakira, Snoop Dogg, Chris Brown, Usher, Ellie Goulding and Justin Bieber, to name only a few!

Plus, he is part of the duo named Jack Ü which Skrillex produces and Diplo (short for Diplodocus, by the way) even manages his very own record company called Mad Decent. This guy is truly a one-stop-shop for all of your electronic dance music needs.

So, how did Diplo come to be, and how has he managed to rise to fame and perform on our coveted party stages in Las Vegas? Let’s find out!

Diplo’s History

Back when Diplo was a student at the University of Central Florida, he managed to snag a job as a DJ at Rollins College. After a while, he moved to Philadelphia and started gathering a following from his DJ talents. Here, he met another disc jockey who he began to release singles with; it was from this that he began to break through into the music world.

M.I.A introduced herself to Diplo in 2004 after she had heard his original beats and a few mixes of her own songs at a party he was performing at. It was she who then catapulted his career when she signed him as her tour DJ in 2005.

He then went on to start his aforementioned record label and join various duos and groups such as LSD, Silk City and Major Lazer. This guy has such a portfolio that it will blow your mind — at least, it certainly blows ours! Why else would we be so chuffed that he performs for us?

As far as awards go, he is quite the holder! He was nominated for Grammy Awards in 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2016. Diplo won two Grammys in the end — one for Best Dance/Electronic Album and Best Dance Recording — but, most recently he won the 2019 Grammy for Best Dance Recording again.
