13 Cool Las Vegas Facts You May Not Know

The “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada” sign

Published: 04/09/2023

If you’re looking for all things hot and cool, then Las Vegas is the place to be, fam.

Sin City is queen and that’s fact. She shines with the power of a million neon lights, plus the power of her rich history that never fails to snatch a few wigs.

We all know that this city is the Entertainment Capital of the World, but there’s more to it than that. Now let’s commence this Las Vegas history and fun fact class that’ll make you want to book a flight rn.

Record Breaking Las Vegas Facts

1. Las Vegas Is Visible From Space

NGL, Las Vegas is lit, but just how lit exactly?

Well, let’s just say that what happens in Vegas doesn’t really stay in Vegas, because NASA can see you from space.

The famous Las Vegas Strip is home to over 30 hotels and casinos. All drenched in brilliant neon lights, NASA once published a Sin City image that astronauts snapped from the International Space Station (ISS). So, when in Vegas, just know that you shine…literally.

2. Las Vegas Hosts Over 150 Weddings Per Day

If Paris is known as the City of Love, then Las Vegas is the City of Weddings. Now whether these couples are love drunk or just drunk, “I do” is a popular phrase in this town.

A day in the life of Las Vegas always entails dozens of walk-in weddings with a matching Elvis impersonator who can get you and your bae hitched in less than ten minutes.

People looking to tie the knot often follow their hearts to the Graceland Wedding Chapel, which is an LGBTQ-friendly venue that has seen couples walk down the aisle since 1977. Here we are over five decades later, and this spur-of-the-moment marriage hub is still slaying the game of love. (Cue the Elvis impersonator singing “Wise men say only fools rush iiiiiiinnnn”🎵

3. Las Vegas Is NOT The Biggest Gambling City In the World

Sure, there was a time when Las Vegas casinos joined forces to reign as the largest gambling city on the globe, but it has long been overtaken by the equally boujee city of Macau, China.

This gem in Asia may only be home to 41 casinos, but seven of those are deemed the biggest casinos in the world. This includes the City of Dreams Resort, MGM Grand, Starworld Hotel & Casino, and the Venetian. Macau’s gambling district attracts high rollers who are ready to flex massive amounts of guap at the blackjack table. This also puts them in the lead in terms of revenue versus Las Vegas.

4. The Exodus Festival is the Longest-Running EDM Festival In Las Vegas

Sin City is home to record-breaking nightclubs, and the Exodus Festival is the best means to party.

Historical Las Vegas Facts

5. Las Vegas Wasn’t Always a Gangsta’s Paradise

The first Las Vegas building established by non-native settlers was built by Mormon missionaries in 1855…a far cry from what Sin City is known for now.

6. The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino Is The OG

The Golden Gate Hotel & Casino is the oldest hotel and casino in the city that sits pretty in Fremont Street, downtown Las Vegas. It originally opened in 1906 under the name “Hotel Nevada.” Slay, OG, slay.

7. Where You Can Find the First Phone In Las Vegas

Hotel Nevada was also home to the first telephone in Las Vegas circa 1907. The hotel still carries a plaque that commemorates the legendary milestone.

8. Over A Hundred Movies Have Been Shot in Vegas

Vegas’ beauty is undeniable—and so it’s no surprise that it has served as the backdrop for over a hundred movies, including the hits below:

  • Jason Bourne (2016)
  • The Hangover, Parts I and III (2009 and 2013)
  • Ocean’s 11 (2001 remake)
  • Leaving Las Vegas (1995)
  • Casino (1995)

Food-Related Las Vegas Facts

9. Seafood is the Unofficial Staple Food of Las Vegas

There is an unspoken, unwritten, yet totally mandatory rule stating that you simply must eat seafood when you visit Vegas.

The seafood options, especially the shrimp cocktail is superior, like 100% bussin’.

In fact, people in Shrimp City…uh, we mean Sin City, love seafood cuisines so much that they collectively consume around 60,000 pounds of shellfish per day (circa 2008). That’s legit more than the entire U.S. eats in a whole year.

10. You Can Unlock Secret Menus

The restaurants in Vegas are already big Ws, the most bussin’ dishes are hidden on a secret menu. If you want in on off-the-menu delicious food, all you’re finna do is ask for it.

11. Eat in the Dark, Because Why Not?

You know what’s scarier than the dark?

Eating in the dark.

While you recover from our stand-up comedy-worthy joke, allow us to flex BLACKOUT, a fine dining restaurant that serves you dinner in pitch darkness. With your vision temporarily impeded, your taste buds will be ultra-activated to truly appreciate the rich flavors of the meal. It’s one of the unique Las Vegas dining experiences that has all the crowds lining up.

Spooky Las Vegas Facts

12. Lake Mead Conceals An Abandoned City

And nope, we aren’t talking about Atlantis.

This tale will snatch your wig.

St. Thomas was a quaint little town until it was filled up in the 1930s as part of the Hoover Dam project. It has since become Lake Mead—the largest manmade reservoir in the U.S.

Despite receiving compensation for their lost property, a bunch of people stood their ground until the water rose. The last man standing was Mr. Hugh Lord, who paddled away from his home when the water levels reached his front door in 1938.

Today, some of the water has receded, bringing some remnants of the aquatic town to light.

13. Some Las Vegas Hotels Are Missing a Floor Or Two

The number 13—although totally innocent—is deemed as unlucky across America.

Meanwhile, in some Asian countries, the number four has a bad rep.

To respect both of these concepts, some buildings just skip those numbers for their floors altogether. So, don’t panic if you can’t find the numbers in the elevator of your Las Vegas hotel.

14. It’s Home to the World’s Spookiest Museum

Fans of all things paranormal will get chills during the ghostly tour of Zak Bagans’ Haunted Museum. From stories of hostile spirits roaming the halls to the presence of the Dybbuk Box, the world’s most haunted object, this museum features 30 spine-chilling rooms and endless corridors—you will find yourself becoming the main character in a horror film. Guests even need to sign a mandatory waiver because of dark activity that goes on inside.
